Public speaking: is it easy?

Today, public speaking is more and more common. Even so, it is rare that the subject of public speaking is dealt with within ones’ company. Nevertheless, the subject arouses interest, even apprehension. According to an American study, 75% of those studied didn’t like the feelings that the subject triggered. Speaking in public is even the first cause of fear, coming before death*.

 “It’s easy, you’ll see!”

Faced with our fears, one reflex is to reassure: “It’s easy, you’ll see!”, “Just be natural, everything will be fine.” It’s a trap, because far from being reassured, the person could ask himself why it doesn’t feel natural for him; consequently, he’ll be a lot more nervous than to begin with. Never forget that faced with the exercise of speaking in public, being natural means being uncomfortable.

Become aware…. that it is not so easy.

The challenge for managers is understanding that it is not easy for their team. Public speaking is indeed a stressful exercise the distorts the view we have, depending on the confidence that we allow ourselves to have, depending on how we accept our social image. So, we must support our teams, not by telling them that it’s easy and to be natural, but by underscoring that public speaking stirs emotions and many feelings that are difficult to handle. Which doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be done, it doesn’t mean that they are not good at it, and it doesn’t mean that in the end, they won’t ever enjoy it.

It’s time to act… how to help your team?

Understanding your team is good, helping them is even better. To do this, here are 3 tips so that public speaking becomes a more serene exercise for your teams.

 

  1. Favor short speeches

 It’s always complicated to choose the best format. 5 minutes is too short and very demanding. And 30-45 minutes is way too long. Worse yet, this format forces the teams into the pitfall of filling-in to be where they’re expected to be. Good news, a happy medium exists! You can challenge your teams to present for 10-12 minutes. This shorter format enables you to share a project, be it in a less comprehensive manner, but much more impactful.

  1. Make your teams rehearse

When you make someone rehearse, you must make comments. And we aren’t often well equipped enough to make constructive comments. Not to worry! If you don’t have the necessary tools to analyze a speech, don’t hesitate to share how you feel about it. This will allow the speaker to perceive the emotions he transmits through his speech.
